Artesia High School grad James Harden wins NBA MVP!
A big Lakewood congratulations and shout-out to Artesia High School grad James Harden on being named as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player for 2017-18.
The Houston Rockets’ star guard was the NBA’s leading scorer at 30.4 points per game and led the Rockets to their best record ever…and the top record in the NBA regular season. In the playoffs, Harden led the Rockets to within one game of the NBA finals, losing a tough seventh game in the Western Conference Finals to the eventual NBA champions from Golden State.
Harden was named the Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame's Athlete of the Year for 2007, after leading the Artesia Pioneers to a state championship. See the Lakewood CityTV video of James from that era.
Watch a few minutes also of this NBA highlight video of Harden to get a sense of his amazing moves and stellar assists to teammates.
In the words of the Bleacher Report, “Harden has established himself as one of the league's premier isolation scorers and pick-and-roll maestros, destroying defenses with his drives to the basket and step-back threes. His ability to break down defenders off the dribble makes him one of the toughest players to guard.”
James Harden is another example of how the Lakewood community has nurtured young athletes and youth of all talents into successful careers for many years.
